The Angel (Boiler Room, Kidulthood) joins The Film Scorer! Angel’s latest score is for the crime thriller Heist 88, which came out last year but her score only released last month. As such, we spend much of our conversation talking about the score, including the hybrid palette, influences from Chicago’s 1980s club/house music scene, and getting into Courtney B. Vance’s head. We also touch on some of her other film and television projects, her long career as a record producer and DJ, obtaining her early publishing catalog from Sony, and plenty more! Heist 88 also marks Angel’s fifth collaboration with director Menhaj Huda, dating back to his debut feature film Kidulthood.
Angel also has a few new scores coming out soon, including GAIA (which she mentions briefly during our chat) (releasing on December 20), Lives Beyond Motion (releasing January 31), and Velvet Vision.
One thing that struck me during our conversation is the amount of collaboration and exploration Angel does in her scores. This may come from her parallel career as a producer, where she often works with various solo artists, putting them in a place of comfort before taking them out of it and pushing them into new territory. This matches Angel’s work in media scoring by again first getting her collaborators comfortable because she’s “never coming from a place of ‘oh I can’t do this or that’, it’s always from a place of ‘I wonder if this’ll work.’”
Angel’s score, and much of her other music, is available on all major platforms. Heist 88 is currently available on Paramount+ or on demand. You can find out more about Angel on her website.

About Heist 88
“Inspired by true events, Heist 88 is the unbelievable story centered on Jeremy Horne (Courtney B. Vance (The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, Lovecraft Country)), a criminal mastermind with an innate ability to convince anyone to do just about anything, who decides to pull one last job before going to prison. He recruits four young bank employees to steal close to $80 million dollars in a daring and brazen assault on the U.S. banking system. The film takes place in a time before widespread computerization and the vast cybersecurity of today. It also reunites Vance with Keesha Sharp, who portrayed Dale Cochran in the award-winning limited series The People vs. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, and Bentley Green, who recently starred alongside Vance in the drama series 61st Street. HEIST 88 also stars Keith David (The Nice Things), Xavier Clyde (City on Fire), Nican Robinson (Beef) and Precious Way (Days of our Lives).” – From Paramount
