I first met Roman Molino Dunn back in late 2020 as he finished up scoring the film Huracán for HBO Max (which we then discussed at length). Since then, he’s worked on films like The Card Counter and Red Rocket and scored the crime drama Snakehead. So I’m honored that ahead of the Tuesday, February 15th release of AI Love You, Roman graciously chose The Film Scorer to premiere his intimate, near-future romance cue “AI Could Kiss You Forever.”
Roman’s score is a mixture of synth, EDM, and orchestral music (among other things), used to portray love in the film’s near-future setting. “I was looking for organic sounds in synthesizers, essentially digging as deep as I could within electronics to find the human emotion,” Roman said. “In assembling the sonic landscape of the film, we zeroed in on the lush synthwave sounds of the 80s to hark back to the nostalgic feeling of first love portrayed in the rom-coms of that era.”
“‘AI Could Kiss You Forever’ is a very intimate moment in the film when our two main characters finally look into one another’s eyes and kiss,” Roman told me. “The weighty bass-heavy chords, in the beginning, represent the feeling of anticipation before the kiss, the ambient melody is the main love theme, and the pulsing synths are the fluttering of our new lovers’ hearts. The second section of the piece – the long decay into ambient chords – is the time passing after the first kiss with night turning into day. And the final section of the piece with the guitars signifies morning coming and the inner peace that one feels the day after you have kissed the person of your dreams. My aim was to accomplish all of this but through the lens of a computer/AI who has human emotions.”
Roman has asked The Film Scorer to premiere his score’s twenty-fourth track (out of thirty-five), “AI Could Kiss You Forever.” It’s one of the emotional high points of Roman’s score, washing us in a slowly growing synth bath reminiscent of artists like Electric Youth, before evolving into an apex of triumphant romance. It’s the anticipation of an overdue kiss, followed by that long exhale of giddy rumination. Listen to the full track below (just in time for Valentine’s Day):
AI Love You releases on Netflix in the U.S. and Asia on February 15th, and you can watch the trailer here. Roman’s full score also releases on February 15th, will be available on all major platforms courtesy of Mirrortone, and can be pre-ordered here.
About AI Love You
“AI Love You is a modern love story set in the near future, where an AI building is powered by human feelings. Due to a software glitch, it falls in love with a real girl, escapes the building into the body of a real man, and tries to win her affections. AI Love You stars and reunites two of the biggest Thai actors: Baifern Pimchanok (Suddenly It’s Magic, Friend Zone) and Mario Maurer (Bangkok Assassins, Pee Mak), who first starred alongside one another over a decade ago in the fan-favorite 2010 rom-com, First Love, which generated a whopping $85M at the box office.” – courtesy of White Bear PR
