Another year, another list of the ten “best” film scores, this time I’m running through 2023. These scores aren’t presented in any particular order – I intended to go alphabetically, but instead ended up going by vibes instead, wherever the solo conversation took me. At the end of the day, even though these are described as the “best”, they’re really just favorites – the idea of something being “best” in the arts is silly, and any attempt to discover that sort of “truth” futile. The other caveat is I don’t have any criteria for what’s a favorite, and any choice may change on any given day. By the time you’re reading this list, it may no longer be accurate for me; these are really just snapshots in time.
This was maybe the hardest year for me to determine my favorites. When I started, I had some ideas of what would make it, but there weren’t necessarily any scores that I 100% knew would be on there. By the end, however, things came together pretty easily. The only issue was I considered doing 11 instead of 10, just to make my life easier.
